Neighborhoods of Amsterdam Booklets

Tour the city’s history with HAL

Each summer the Historic Amsterdam League provides a free neighborhood tour of a different section of the city.  In conjunction with these tours HAL produces a companion booklet of articles, stories, photos, and personal memories of that tour area.  Professionally printed, the booklets contain only images and information – no ads or sponsor notices.  There are currently eight Neighborhood Booklets in the series, with several more planned for the coming years.  Current series titles include:

xxx

  • Heart of Amsterdam – Along & Near Lower Church Street (2011)
  • Amsterdam’s South Side – From Port Jackson to Via Ponte (2012)
  • Amsterdam’s West End (2013)
  • Amsterdam’s Rockton (2014)
  • Amsterdam’s Old Town – Original Downtown and Vicinity (2015)
  • Amsterdam’s Reid & Park Hills (2016)
  • Amsterdam’s East End (2017)
  • Amsterdam’s Northern Neighborhoods – Market Hill, Campus Heights, Henrietta Heights (2018)

Take an entertaining walk with HAL through the old neighborhood, find an answer to a question you always had, stumble over a new fact or two, and discover a few forgotten memories along the way.

Amsterdam Postcards

xxx

A new ongoing local series

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries there were literally hundreds of postcards of Amsterdam printed. These cards were a source of civic pride and showed friends, relatives, and acquaintances worldwide that “this is Amsterdam”. Few cards of Amsterdam were produced in recent years until the Historic Amsterdam League initiated production of annual sets in 2011 in conjunction with the neighborhood tour programs: the HAL series now includes 42 cards – 6 for each neighborhood toured to date – and will continue to grow through the coming years. The cards are commercially printed, with subjects ranging from current original photographs to reproductions of vintage 20th century postcards to rarely seen photos of early Amsterdam from historic and private collections.  Get the set for “your” part of the city, start or add to your HAL postcard collection, or just pick up an individual card or two to send out into the world and once again announce that “this is Amsterdam”.

Amsterdam Icons Calendars

A new locally themed offering annually

Each year around Thanksgiving the Historic Amsterdam League is pleased to introduce the new Amsterdam Icons calendar for the coming year.  Amsterdam Icons is a full color 11″ x 17″ wall size calendar themed to some aspect of Amsterdam history – past years have featured historic public buildings, houses of worship, restaurants and eateries, industries, and grand homes and mansions.  Accompanying each monthly illustration is a brief paragraph providing pertinent information and historic facts; the centerfold continues the annual theme with additional relevant text and/or pictures.  Scattered throughout the monthly date listings, in addition to the usual holidays and observances, are important, entertaining, and often little known dates from local history – such as that of the victory of the Rugmakers over the New York Yankees, or the best-forgotten “Bridge Day”.  Past year editions with their frame-worthy pictures have been sell-outs and become collector items.  Put an Amsterdam Icons calendar on the wall at work or home and display your pride in Amsterdam.
